Chapter 28

The interview room was a square box containing a wooden table and four chairs. A red bar ran around the middle of the wall that could be pushed to sound an alarm should officers need immediate assistance with a detainee. Claudia didn’t foresee any issues with Sophie Sinclair.

The woman was twenty-eight, but sitting in this small space she looked younger, smaller.

Afraid.

She’d shrunk into herself.

That was what this room did to a person. This building. It reduced them down to the smallest part of themselves. Especially if they’d never experienced a police custody block or an interview room before. And Sophie Sinclair had never had a run-in with a police officer in her life. Not even a speeding ticket in her name. This woman was the epitome of law-abiding.

Sophie had elected to have a solicitor with her, which was her right, even during a voluntary interview. Whereas most solicitors who came through the doors were pleasant — they were all here to do a job, after all — this guy, Toby Johnson, hadn’t received the memo. He sneered at every opportunity, and Claudia had seen him wipe his hand on his trouser leg after shaking hands with an officer. It wasn’t a discreet move, either. He made it to unsettle the officer in question. Luckily, Claudia was familiar with the cop and he wouldn’t be rattled so easily. He’d grinned. The game was on.

Toby spent a good half an hour talking to Sophie before they went into the interview. Claudia and Russ were aware of the advice he’d have provided. To respond to all questions with the answer, ‘No comment.’ No matter what the officers said, reply, ‘No comment.’

Claudia had to hope that something she said stoked an emotion in Sophie, one that gave her an urge to speak. Otherwise, this was a complete waste of everyone’s time.

She ran through the official legal jargon at the start of the recording. Introductions, the right to legal advice, even during the interview, and that she, Sophie, was not under arrest and was free to leave at any time.

‘My client,’ sneered Johnson down his nose, ‘is here of her own free will and is shocked by the events you want to talk to her about. However, she will take the advice I have provided today.’

Yep, a ‘no comment’ interview.

‘How do you know Harlow Cunningham?’ asked Claudia.

Sophie’s voice was low and quiet in response, as though she was afraid that what she was about to say was the wrong answer. ‘No comment.’

Claudia didn’t flinch. She was prepared for this. ‘Did you know Harlow Cunningham?’

‘What was your relationship with Harlow?’

Claudia leaned back in her chair. Relaxed. Showed Sophie this was not over and she should make herself comfortable too. ‘How did you know Harlow?’

Sophie looked at Johnson, who gave a slight nod. ‘No comment.’ Her lip quivered.

‘When was the last time you saw Harlow?’

Sophie rubbed her hands over her face. The pressure mounting. Johnson laid a hand on her shoulder. Sophie jumped. Johnson removed his hand.
